FROM DENOTATION TO MYTH: A SEMIOTIC READING OF PTSD IN 'MANSION' BY NF

Abstract

This study purposes to analyze the semiotic meaning of the lyrics of the song “Mansion” by NF.  By using Ronald Barthes’ semantic theory, this study determines the most common meaning, and identify myths in the song “Mansion” by NF to understand the concepts of denotation and connotation and identify its cultural myths. This study applies qualitative research with interpretative text analysis. The results of this study are 71 denotation meanings, 41 connotation meanings, and 3 mythical meanings formed from the second order of signification process based on the application of Barthes' semiotic theory to the lyrics of the song Mansion by NF. The findings show that denotation meaning is always present in each data. The connotation meaning covers more than half of the overall data (58%). Meanwhile, the mythical meanings are an emotional burden, isolation and loneliness, and despair due to the internal conflict of the artist as the common thread.
